The Instructors
Serena began her riding career at the age of 4 with Pop Walker, a family friend. Pop owned Thoroughbred race horses and a boarding facility in Downey, Calif. He introduced Serena’s family to an instructor who had a small pony for sale. The instructor was Donna Hargreaves in Cerritos, California. From 1969-1973 Serena rode in the Hargreaves riding program, where she attended many Pony Shows and enjoyed competing in Showmanship, English Equitation, Hunt Seat and Hunter/Jumper class’s.
In 1974 Serena began schooling with her first Arabian, schooling with Rosalind Donaldson owner and trainer of Rose of the Desert Arabians in Hollydale, California. From 1975 to 1980 Serena was a working student at Rose of the Desert Arabians. Where as a Junior Rider she rode Champions and Reserve Champions in Equitation Over Fences, Hunt Seat, Saddle Seat and Western Pleasure at Regional and National Class A Arabian Shows. Serena worked from 1980-1984 as assistant Instructor and Trainer at Rose of the Desert Arabians.
In 1985 Serena accepted a possition as Assistant Rider and Beginning Instructor at Bastencherry Training Stables in Fullerton, California while attending college at Cal State Fullerton, where her training continued working with dressage trainer Andre Beauchamp." I would save up enough money before starting work, to have a lunge lesson, a lesson on an advanced horse and one on my own horse everyday for as many days as I could afford. Yes rider fitness was a necessity! This work gave me such a good grounding and I was totally immersed in the right environment, any spare time was watching others have lessons and taking notes."
Serena moved to Prado Equestrian Center in Chino, California and continued teaching until 2001 when Prado Equestrian Center changed management. Serena moved to Norco, California and continued coaching horse and rider teams for competition.
In 2011 Serena was delighted to resume her riding program at Prado Equestrian Center.
